Good news after the colloquium
I just wanted to let everyone know about an incident that happened when I got back to my parish in Virginia.
My choir takes care of the music for the Saturday evening mass. We have been singing a Latin Gloria & Sanctus since Christmas. The people do very well on the Sanctus, but have been a little slow on the Gloria. I have talked to our priest about this (he is very concerned about their participation). I pointed out to him that when he sings the people also sing, and I also asked him if he could point out what the Vatican II documents have to say about the chant and Latin. We had discussed the possibility of him mentioning this in his homily (they are usually pretty bad, so at least this would be instructional).
To my suprise, this past Saturday, at the end of mass (just after the announcements), he spoke for several minutes about the importance of preserving the Latin and chant in the mass. Not only that, but he finished the mass in Latin. I was very pleased and surprised. He spoke of adding more Latin at the Saturday mass. What amazed me even more was that he gave the same talk at the Sunday masses. I really thought he would only mention it on Saturday, because it tends to be a more traditional congregation. I just wanted to share this news with all of you.
