This is an encouraging story, but I'm not sure about the wisdom in stating that the "Tridentine Mass was established in the 16th century."

There was no perception of the Mass being "Tridentine" in the years between Trent and the II Vatican Council. The Mass, as celebrated in those years, was really and truly a part of the stream of many centuries of tradition. The term "Tridentine," as Pope Benedict has noted, was applied later--after 1965.

Of course, there were some things about the Pian Missal which distinguished it from the previous Missals, and perhaps I'm splitting hairs, but I think that there's a large group of the faithful who think of the Latin ("Tridentine") Mass as a 400-year long detour from the Church's tradition, and statements such as the one with which I'm taking issue can, however accidentally, reinforce this misconception.

Finally, something positive: Three cheers to Fr. McAfee and all the other priests who are doing so much to encourage the use of Latin at Mass.
