Dom Jean Claire OSB *1920 +2006
In his 87th year of life, and 60th year of monastic profession , Dom Jean Claire OSB passed away at Solesmes on 25 April 2006. After undergraduate studies in the humanities and music, he took his first vows at Solesmes in 1946, and was ordained priest in 1951.
In 1971 he succeeded Dom Joseph Gajard as choirmaster of the Abbey, a position he held for a quarter century. His researches in Gregorian chant are well known to specialists, his publications many and meticulous. If one were pressed to single out a particular piece, it would be volume XV of the "Etudes gregoriennes" published in 1975, in which he presented his theory of the "cordes-meres" or archaic modal scales. May he rest in peace, donec veniat Redemptor qui portas paradisi aperiat et ad gaudia sempiterna perducat!
