Why search; using search functionality; how to optimize your posts for search
  • Why search?

As the forum grows in contributions from users, it will become somewhat more likely that veteran members will have already addressed topics that newcomers want information about. The forum software has a simple yet keyword search function that will make finding a topics of interest rather easy.

Please note that the forum search is unique to the forum. If you wish to search for an item on the main site, please use the search tool specific to that section.

    Using search functionality

    1. Locate the Search form at the top of the forum page.
    2. Type in one or more keywords into the input box that appears.
    3. If you want to search the titles of discussions, add the keyword "allintitle:" before your search terms.
    4. Click the Search button; wait for your results.

The search is provided by Google, so their usual features should work: e.g., prefixing a keyword with a minus sign "-" to exclude posts containing that word; or surrounding a phrase with quotation marks to force a search for the exact phrase.

    Optimizing your posts for search

    1. If you are initiating a discussion, use a descriptive discussion topic. Most of the time a suitable topic will arise while you are typing your comments first.
    2. Check your spelling. Many browsers will have either a built-in spell-checker or capability to add a spell-checking extension for the English language. For words in Latin and other languages, be extra careful.

If anyone has any additional suggestions, please place them below. Worthy suggestions will be added to the list above and the contributor will be given credit.

  • Maybe I'm not doing the search right. But is there something like a subcategory where I can get audio resourses, like list of audio resources for Propers, Vespers, Children's , links to MP3 files, CDS, etc. It seems to be spread out. What's the best way to find them?

  • Do this:

    SEARCH

    Choose COMMENTS

    Enter mp3

That will take you right to them!
  • Thanks, I got it. It's a big help.
( how did you figure it out?)

  • I spend way too much time trying to find things out about a whole lot of subjects on google. So I have learned to choose search characteristics that are vague and yet to the point. Like searching for info about a shotgun wedding. Two words....white shotgun....should do it. Let me try....

It worked! And now I know where where I may purchase real shotgun shells modified with white Christmas lights to be useful ornaments for that special occasion...with two extra bulbs.

I knew that I would have more luck finding the mp3's if I searched in the comments fields, so COMMENTS and then mp3 as the word to search on did the rest.
  • Here's a tip for using the Google search feature on the forum.

To search the titles of threads, add the keyword
    allintitle:
    before your search terms.

The old forum software had a feature for searching subject lines, but the new one doesn't have that feature. This Google search keyword should have approximately the same effect. I hope it's useful.
  • I tried "allintitle:" and it did not work for me, but I may be doing it wrong
  • Yes, quite possibly! That's always my default position when a user has trouble but doesn't give me any information to work with. :-)
  • I just wish these features were available in the mobile view - everytime I want to do anything interesting (like look at these incredible attachments) I have to use a different machine....
  • Carl, if your mobile device has the option of installing an additional browser, you can use one for browsing the forum in the mobile mode and one for the full-site view. I installed Opera Mobile and was able to successfully view PDF attachments.
  • Good suggestion. I'd heard that wasn't allowed on the Kindle, but there might be a workaround.
