Summer Chant Intensive, with Scott Turkington

Scott Turkington
Duquesne University
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
June 14-18, 2010

Preliminary schedule

Scott Turkington (Stamford Schola Gregoriana) is the living heir to the classical chant method, the author of The Gregorian Chant Masterclass, and a marvelous teacher.

For a full week prior to the Colloquium, you can study Gregorian chant with him in this program. His classes are famously engaging, with the teacher assisting students of all ages making a contribution. Turkington is a student of Theodore Marier, who was, in turn, a protege of Dom Gajard, the successor to Dom Mocquereau, the great chant scholar who, with Dom Pothier, fathered the Liber Usualis and the early scholarly publishing efforts of Solesmes. Thus is Turkington a direct intellectual descendant in this tradition, along with vast experience in chant studies and pedagogy, and the famed leader of the revival in the United States.

It is called an intensive because it permits students to live and breath the art of chant like no other program. You will study the basics, yes, but move into into a detailed exploration of the wonderful world of modes, interpretation of neumes, rhythm, and the style required by chant. Special evenings sessions cover chironomy (conducting) and the fine art of pointing and singing the Psalms.

It is intended for people who desire something more than a weekend workshop. It will become technical, to be sure, but not inaccessible to the musician who is just approaching this music. It takes place the week before the Colloquium so that the people who attend this intensive will be prepared to be leaders and mentors to the others (many of them beginners) who will attend. (It is note necessary to attend both programs, however.)

This is the one week you will need to set you on the path toward full mastery of this art form that is sweeping through the United States in a full-scale restoration. But rather than looking back, this intensive prepares a bright future of beautiful singing in every parish, with everyone taking part.

Textbooks: The Parish Book of Chant by Richard Rice; The Technique of Gregorian Chironomy; and the Graduale Romanum or the Gregorian Missal.

Classes begin on Monday afternoon and continue through Friday noon, culminating in a Mass with fully sung Gregorian propers at the Church of the Epiphany in downtown Pittsburgh. Students are eligible for a certificate of completion, issued by the CMAA and signed by Professor Turkington.
