Fixes and Features in New Forum Software
  • I've upgraded the forum software to VanillaForums version 2, and with that upgrade some changes have arrived:

    * MP3 files may now be uploaded as attachments.

    * Attachments now can be downloaded successfully without the extra zero-byte prefix which previously corrupted them.

    * The "play" icon for mp3 links is no longer a nice big "Play" logo, but a tiny arrow next to the link.

    * Private "whisper" messages are now called "conversations". Use the "Inbox" link in the top header to see them. Conversations may be started among multiple users rather than only one-to-one.

    * Embedded videos appear to be working, but I haven't tested this.

    Enjoy!
  • It seems I can't download any of the attachments. What's going wrong?
  • I can't download any either. I mouse-over the attachment icon and see a filename, but there's no link to click, and clicking the image doesn't work either. Anyone else experiencing issues?
  • Haven't tried the attachments but in general this is a wonderful upgrade. Takes a bit of getting used to but I'm very pleased.

  • I must say that the forum seems to be running extremely slow. But I am way down here in South Texas . . . perhaps the lines aren't as fast to here!
  • Aw, I should have known there would be a snag. I'm investigating, and sorry for the inconvenience.
  • Because the CMAA web site runs on a shared server with dozens of other customers at the hosting company, the performance of our server is affected by the load on the system from other customers, and our load is not the heaviest -- it seems to be about the 3rd heaviest at the moment.
  • If people here liked change, they wouldn't be into Gregorian chant and the EF!

Seriously though, this has good potential: it finally looks good on a mobile browser!
  • Let me know if speed improves. I turned off the "fcgiphp5" web server feature, which was there to boost our speed, but maybe didn't work so well.
  • Ben and Steven, would you try downloading attachments again, please?
  • Working great out here on the Left Coast, Richard! Speed is actually great. Congrats.
    Love the "draft saved" feature.
  • Daniel has confirmed to me that speed is better and he can download attachments, so unless I hear otherwise, I will treat that issue as resolved. The problem appeared because the new software lets us control who can download and who can't, based on the user's role -- whether he's logged in or not, etc. And the permissions had not been set up, so I fixed them.

Another user sent a private message to show me that the bookmark feature wasn't working properly. The little "star" symbol to mark/unmark a discussion thread was missing, so I put it into place, and bookmarking works now.
  • Yes, downloading works now for me (I'm using Chrome). Thanks!
  • One more issue: the CAPTCHA puzzle in the forum registration procedure wasn't configured, so no one could register. That should be better now.
  • OK...this isn't working well for my mac.

I click on partipated discussions and i get the ones from 2008. I try to go to the last page for the latest ones, and it says, 'i have not participated in any discussions'

All of the links that I posted as links to download scores from my website and the preview audio file do not work anymore.
  • Hi, Francis,

For the audio files, remember to post complete URLs starting with "http://" . I fixed the incomplete URLs in a bunch of your old posts, so they should be better now.
  • The plugin software to identify Participated Discussions wasn't sorting them, so I found and added a fix to do that. Thanks for the heads-up.
  • Thanks, chonak... much obliged!
  • Looks like attachments are working for me as well. Thanks, chonak!
  • Is there a reason why comments (by others) to my bookmarked discussions are sent to my email rather than simply appearing in their respective threads? That wasn't the previous behavior, was it?
  • Indeed that is a new function in this version of the forum software. Those notifications for bookmarked discussions are enabled by default, but you can customize them.

To enable or disable those notifications:

    * In the menu at the top of this page, click on your name. Your user profile page will appear.
    * Then click on "My Preferences" to see the options for notifications.

  • Okay, the Search function really sucks. It gives you a few results, then "more results" which perhaps triples the number of results - all most recent - making it impossible to search for things that were posted a long time ago.
  • Edited. I am a technological ditz.
  • Looking at the search again, it doesn't seem all bad. CHGiffen, can you give an example of a search that doesn't work well?

I suppose the big downside at present is that the search examines comment text and does not offer an option to search on titles only.
  • Just now, a search on "motet" produced 20 results, clicking "more results" gave another 20 results (all most recent). There was no further "more results" option.

I got similar results searching on "CPDL" yesterday, knowing that there was a thread somewhere about two years back or so - and, of course, I was disappointed that the search only went back to sometime this past year (since "CPDL" is mentioned quite a bit here).

Searching on "CPDL copyright" gives the same number of results, but they don't go as far back as searching on "CPDL" alone does - which makes it seem as if the search is really on "CDPL" OR "copyright" (not "CPDL" AND "copyright" as implied by the "Searching in for forum" topic. Indeed, I checked one of the citations - and, although the thread does contain "CPDL", it does not contain "copyright".

Moral: you cannot refine your search by typing more keywords. Bummer.
  • Well, there is an option to enable some sort of Google search on the forum, but it would require either accepting ads or paying them $100/year.
  • I was able to bump the number of results returned from 20 up to 200.
  • Hm: I found that Google waives the requirement of ads for non-profit organizations, so I added the Google search to the site. I hope it'll be useful.
  • Thanks, Richard. Let's hope that this will solve the problems.
  • I want to preface this by saying I hate change... and yet, I always do adjust! :-)

Anyhow, perhaps it's just my computer screen, but I would like to suggest that the yellow on the "new" part of each post is a bit on the bright/obnoxious side. All of the other colors are relatively muted, so I think a much lighter yellow would be more appropriate and pleasing to the eye and not as distracting.
    Thanked by 1Gavin
  • Ah, a comment on aesthetics! And I agree that the choice of a paler yellow for the "New" designation would be much easier on the eyes, yet still quite visible. Something like "background: #FFFFCC" might work much better (I don't know how to coax this combox into showing this - it doesn't seem to like html "span style=" statements).

Another aesthetic comment: Although I'm quite used to virtually all blogs putting the posts on the left, with a column on the right for other information, I'm equally used to many forums doing exactly the reverse (such as was done in the previous incarnation of this forum). This variance in style serves as a kind of "signal" to the user just what she/he is looking at and doing, and such visual cues, however subtle or not, tend to make it easier for the user.

One last thing, on a different point: Is the "Announcement" designation really necessary for job postings? That such threads are already "Closed" seems enough. And I doubt that we want to keep seeing these announcement piling up at the top of the list of threads. If it is deemed desirable to have them at the top for a short while (a week?), then that is a different matter.

Sorry if I seem so picky, but as manager of CPDL's ChoralWiki, experience has made me rather sensitive to such things regarding appearance, etc. I am happy that performance speed seems to have improved over the old version, and - like marajoy - I do adjust to change, even when at first some of it seems annoying.
  • "Announcement" discussions are displayed like the "sticky" discussions in version 1: they stay at the top of the list. We used to have half a dozen of 'em, and now there are just two.

The particular job posting currently appearing at the top deserved a little extra visibility for a couple of days: the contact person tried to submit it on the first day after the conversion, but was impeded by a technical snag (since fixed). Anyway, I'll let it move down into the normal sequence of listings.
  • Thanks, Richard - I was assuming that "Announcement" was like the old "Sticky" tag.
  • Here's a little milestone: the forum has accumulated 6000 discussion threads:

  • Is there any way you could allow GABC file to upload? It's not too common, but it would be nice.
  • What happens when you try? Is there an error message?
  • I was wondering why my RSS feed on the forum had gone silent last week. But I'm trying to re-subscribe using Google Reader, we'll see if that gets synced up to my tablet.

Nice thing about RSS, of course, is that the speed of the connection pretty much doesn't matter.
  • Thanks for the note, Carl: I never expected that some folks find an RSS feed for a forum useful!
  • It just says it isn't allowed. Here's a copy and paste of what I get:

    File upload failed. Reason:
(a psalm of david.gabc) Uploaded file type is not allowed
  • There shouldn't be much of a problem permitting .gabc files since they (like .tex and .ltx files) are really just text files (.txt). The alternative is to rename them as .txt files before uploading.
  • OK, Ben, would you give it a try now? I have added "gabc" to the allowed list of file extensions.

Also, a tip: it's good to avoid blank spaces in file names. E.g.:
    a_psalm_of_david.gabc is better then
    a psalm of david.gabc
Either will work, but in the former case, the resulting URL will be easier to read.
  • Looks like it works!
  • Oh, I guess the file name no longer determines the URL in this version, so you needn't mind about the spaces. In the old version, the original file name was reflected in the URL of the stored file. Sorry for my error.
  • I just posted the following in the "HTML tips for beginners" - but, alas, there is no indication that there has been a new post there, so I'm reposting it here:

With the new software installed, it is not clear just what HTML features are enabled (not that it was all that clear before!). Clearly, some of the above hints do not work. And, thanks to the ability to preview ones posts, I've found that "span style=..." doesn't seem to work, nor does BBCode. It would be very helpful to forum contributors to have an accurate list of what works and what doesn't.

    Ah, at least "blockquote" works!
  • Sorry that the above post is largely redundant, but I didn't realize that "HTML tips..." was a link to a thread "HTML shortcuts..." and consequently totally missed that my post there was noted in "All discussions."
  • Charles, can you tell me what the appropriate RSS feed is for this forum? When I hooked it up yesterday, it said there were 10 new postings. This morning, it says there's nothing new - so it's either not working properly, or I'm looking in the wrong place.

The reason I use the RSS feed is because I can scan through the posts about 4 times faster than on the website. And I can read them offline.

    Thanks!
    Carl
  • Carl, does the RSS feed under "Quick links" include what you need?
  • CH, there are also some editor options that can be enabled.  I've enabled the "WYSIWYG editor" as an experiment, though I'm not sure whether it might be convenient for some for confusing for others.

  • No, Chonak, I tried it this morning and got the same behavior.  It gave me a random assortment of ten new and old posts, and doesn't update.
  • It appears that this is becoming the defacto support thread ... ;-)

I can't change the e-mail address on my profile, and it points to an address that's now obsolete.  When I use "Edit my account" and change the address, it won't save it.  Any ideas?  Can you override this with your super duper controls?
